Short version: Mihrab uses your data to show nearby masjids, manage prayer reminders, and keep listings accurate.
- You can browse prayer times without an account.
- We do not sell personal information or use it for third-party advertising.
- You can delete your account from the app or by email request.
Mihrab is a mosque-finder and prayer-timing app built and operated by a single independent developer, Abdur Rehman. This policy explains what information Mihrab collects, why, how it's used, and the choices you have. It applies to the Mihrab mobile app and this website.
Information we collect
Account information
When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and password. Your password is never stored in plain text. You can use Mihrab to browse nearby masjids and prayer timings without an account. An account is only required to follow a masjid, submit or manage one, or receive notifications.
Location data
With your permission, Mihrab uses your device's location to find masjids near you and show distances. You can decline location access and instead search for a masjid by name or drop a pin manually. Location data is used to serve your request and is not stored beyond what's needed to provide these features.
Masjid and prayer-timing data you submit
If you submit or help manage a masjid listing, we store the information you provide: masjid name, address, coordinates, phone number, website, and prayer/iqamah timings, along with which account created or last updated it. Because this describes a public place of worship rather than a person, this listing information is visible to everyone using the app.
Notifications and device data
To deliver prayer reminders and masjid update alerts, we register a push-notification token for your device (via Firebase Cloud Messaging) along with its platform (Android or iOS). We also store your notification preferences, including which masjids you follow, which prayers you want alerts for, and how many minutes ahead of each prayer you'd like a reminder.
Usage and diagnostic data
Mihrab uses Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics (both provided by Google) to understand how the app is used and to catch crashes and errors. This can include general usage events, device/OS information, and crash logs. This data is processed by Google on our behalf. See Google's Privacy Policy for how Firebase handles it.
How we use your information
- To show you nearby masjids and their prayer timings
- To let you follow masjids and manage your notification preferences
- To deliver push notifications you've opted into (prayer reminders, timing changes)
- To let masjid administrators submit, verify, and update their listing
- To keep the app secure, catch bugs, and understand overall usage patterns
- To respond to support requests you send us
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
How information is shared
Masjid listing information (name, address, timings, etc.) is public within the app by design. Your account name and email are not shown to other general users. If you're an admin of a masjid, your name may be visible to other admins of that same masjid. We share data with the service providers that help us run Mihrab, currently Google Firebase (push notifications, analytics, crash reporting) and our cloud hosting/database providers, solely to operate the app. We may also disclose information if required to by law.
Data retention
We keep your account information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete your personal account data. Masjid listings and prayer-timing records you contributed remain in the app (since they describe a place, not you), but are no longer linked to your account.
Your choices
- Edit your name from your profile at any time
- Delete your account from your profile at any time. This is permanent. See our account deletion page for exact steps and what's kept vs. removed.
- Mute or unsubscribe from a masjid's alerts, or adjust reminder timing, at any time
- Deny or revoke location permission and use manual search instead
- Turn off push notifications from your device's system settings
Children's privacy
Mihrab is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we'll remove it.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your information, including encrypted storage of credentials on your device and hashed passwords on our servers. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data appropriately for an app of this size.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Mihrab grows. We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we do. Continued use of Mihrab after a change means you accept the updated policy.
